In the novel, The Book Thief, there are societal messages such as everybody dies so life needs to be cherished. In the book, we see that Death takes part in helping the reader understand this message.There are many deaths to overcome so we start to understand that life should not be taken for granted. We can see life being cherished throughout the book with Liesel bringing snow to Max, Rudy helping the prisoner and lastly Max’s trip to the concentration camp During this novel, we see a story of a sad and deathly life as people get their lives taken away from the Germans. In the story, we meet a boy named Max, who is a Jewish boy who hides in the Hubermanns' basement. Lizeal knows that Max really wants to see snow, and with being stuck in the basement he cannot. Lizeal brings him snow and they build a snowman and have a snowball fight. Soon Max got very sick and was lying on the bed in the basement, “Don’t die,” she whispered. “Please, Max, just don’t die.”(Zusak 216) As Max was shivering and Lizeal was sitting next to him she blamed herself for bringing the snow and the cause of him getting sick. She sat in fear thinking Max would die. At the end, Death does not take Max; but this shows that even to a boy living in a basement that he could die. …show more content…

Liesel feels a sense of sorrow and grief for them as they walk by her and her papa. All Liesel wishes she could do is for them to know that she feels so much sorrow and pain for them. Hans is around when he sees a man fall; he gives him a piece of bread when both him and the old man are whipped. “She had seen a Jewish man who had twice given her the most beautiful pages of her life marched to a concentration camp.” (Zusak 350) At this part Death is with them reminding them that they can get through
