Society in Of Mice and Men
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck describes the problems within society during the 1930’s. Many of the characters in his book act out of loneliness. Steinbeck shows the necessity of friendship in hard times, and the hypocritical nature of loneliness and isolation. Using the actions of the characters in the book, he shows that this loneliness causes people to strike out at those they view as weaker than themselves.
The 1930s started with the stock market crash of 1929, destroying much of the American economy and causing millions of Americans to lose their jobs. By 1930, more than 15 million American workers were unemployed. This period of hoplessness is seen clearly in many of the characters in Of Mice and Men.
