If humans try to control others, it will backfire on them. In the book “The Giver” by Lois Lowry the characters live in a typical dystopian world, but their feelings and wants are controlled by their society. Nobody in the book is aware of pain, hunger, love or death besides the giver who holds the memories for the community. Jonas starts to realize what secrets his society has hidden from him and yearns for the feeling of love as he has been chosen to hold the community's memories. As Jonas discoveries the true meaning behind death he makes a plan with the giver on how to escape his community. Because people in charge are taking away individuality and feelings, their society will begin to crumble.

Jonas no longer wants to miss out on what it feels to love and have choices instead of being controlled. “It was possible, what they planned, barely possible. If it failed he would most likely be killed. But what did that matter? If he stayed, his life was no longer worth living,” (156) Jonas had started to make a plan of escape from his community. He no longer wanted to stay in his “perfect world” and is turning against his society. “If I go with you, and together we take all their protection from the memories, Jonas, the community will be left with no one to help them” (156). The giver knows that most of the people in the community have no idea of the secrets hidden from them and wants to help them adjust to the feelings of sadness, pain, hunger, and love. Without the giver, the community would begin to crumble. “She left here that day, left this room, and did not go back to her dwelling. I was notified by the speaker that she had gone directly to the chief elder and asked to be released” (144) When the giver's daughter had taken on the job of holding memories she couldn't take it any longer and decided to kill herself. The community was left with all the sad memories she had, everyone suffered until the memories went away. The giver and Jonas wanted the community to have human nature and so, Jonas escaped his home leaving the people
