As often as the phrases socio-economic status (SES) and social class are used interchangeably amongst colloquial language, there is an important difference despite at first glance being difficult to distinguish between the two. Before we go into depth about class being a possible contributing element to parenting style, it is crucial that we first address any confusion between the key terminologies that are going to reappear in this literature. Most importantly, SES is a multifaceted variable that contains three discriminants (Baker, 2014) which are all measurable whereas social class relates closely to consumer disposition – that is, product and branding. The trio of educational, occupational and financial (income and wealth) factors all interplay to reflect any SES-related differences in parents' circumstances and characteristics with educational factors being a valued predictor of outcomes (Bornstein, 2012). This contemporary conceptualisation of the British class system was introduced and reviewed by a team of sociologists (Savage et al., 2015) to depict the unequal distribution of three kinds of capital that are economic, social and cultural.
