Throughout the movie “Pleasantville”, there are numerous social issues. This paper will look at and identify some of them, as well as defining the basic social issues and how they relate to the movie. Some sociological concepts found in the movie include Race and Ethnicity, Age Stratification, and Social Interaction. Throughout the movie, there are plenty of examples, but I will use the three main concepts I found. The example of Race and Ethnicity would be Discrimination. Discrimination, according to the textbook, is the unequal treatment of various categories of people. (Macionis pg.86) In the movie, when the younger generation and some of the older generation start to turn to color from black and white, the townspeople get angry and can’t accept the change. The example from the movie would be the courtroom if anything. The court in the town, which they never had until people started changing colors, is basically one big interrelated system. The final theoretical perspective from the movie would be the biggest one, which is Conflict Theory. According to the textbook, Conflict Theory is theoretical framework that sees society as divided by inequality and conflict. There are plenty of examples of this from the movie. The first example would be once again, the older generation. In the beginning of the movie, everything was fine. All the generations were getting along and had no problems. When David and Jennifer enter the world, everything changes. Before they entered the town, everything was normal and there was no such thing as discrimination in Pleasantville. When they joined the town however, everything started to change. The basic characters who have not experienced emotion are still seen as black and white, how they think things should be.
