A. I learned a lot of things while i watched the documentary on the MS-13s. They do a lot of things that i never knew people could do. There are so many members in this gang and everyone wants to be higher and higher up each day. A good term from our sociology book that i connected to the documentary was Competition. Competition in biology and sociology, is a contest between two or more organisms, animals, individuals, groups, etc., for territory, a niche, for a location of resources, for resources and goods, for mates, for prestige, for recognition, for awards, for group or social status, or for leadership.
Outsiders are a common sources of topic throughout literature and are defined as people who differ from what society deems as normal or having normal qualities. Throughout the semester, we have read several works that use outsiders to help convey a certain theme or message and there was one particular work that stood out from the rest. While reading “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, the use of outsiders was incredibly effective due to Sherman using his own experiences of being an outsider throughout his life. This essay is the perfect example of the use of outsiders because of Alexie discussing how his parents raised him, his childhood experiences in school, and his adulthood ambitions. The Outsiders make the readers think about if it is right to judge people because of social class, their family and how they look. The further you get into the book the more you think of the hardships of people judging you. There are multiple ways people judge you that are shown in the book such as family/friends and social class/ income. This reminds the reader about the civil rights movement, which is around the same time as when the book takes place. At the end of the book you get the message that being prejudiced is not the right thing.

The award winning novel the Outsiders is a true wake up call to society regarding concepts that have been present in society over the years. The story is looked at in the point of view of the east side, the lower class or in this case the greasers. The novel has received recognition by winning several awards such as: the New York tribune best teenage book list in 1967, the Chicago tribune book world spring book festival honor book also in 1967, the ALA best young adult books in 1975, and then later on won the Massachusetts children book award in 1979. The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma where the author was raised. The author was 15 when she started writing the book but wrote most of it when she was 16, however the book was published when she was 18.
The documentary called The Hunting Grounds, had multiple concepts that relate to sociology. Using a sociological perspective, it was very prevalent to see the ways college campuses use patriarchy and gender stratification to keep women who have been sexually assaulted on campus from disclosing information or even getting help about these issues. Through the discrimination against women at these gender institutions the women formed a Feminist movement to bring awareness and help to the victims on campuses all around the world and to stop the assaults from reoccurring. The Hunting Grounds is a documentary that reveals the untold stories of women on college campuses and how these women have fought to have their voice heard about sexual assault on campuses. Sexual assault and rape on campuses has always been a major problem for colleges all over the world yet very little has been done to protect the students.
A sociological classic, Elias and Scotson elaborated the key to understanding the dynamics of segregation through their Established and Outsider figuration. The empirical example of their figuration is based on observations of the small town near Leicester, anonymously renamed Winston Parva. Here, both sociologists observed a rather curious form of segregation: the amount of time a resident had been living there determined the affiliation to each group. The so-called Established, who had lived in Winston Parva for at least two generations, “stigmatised them generally as people of lesser worth”. Important was to observe the difference in power and cohesion in each of the groups.
Many social issues are portrayed in television shows because they are common in every society so it makes it easy to relate to the audience. One show in particular that has many social issues that are demonstrated perfectly to the audience is a Netflix original show called “Shameless.” This is a show that focuses on a single family in which the father, Frank, is a deadbeat drunk who is never reliable. The mother, Monica, abandoned the family a year or so after she had the last child, she is mentally bipolar. She shows up occasionally throughout the series, but for the most part is in some unknown place to the audience.
The Blind Side is explored and defined through several different messages. Views on race are examined and thoroughly described through the sociological concepts; Minority group, racial minority group, prejudice, stereotypes and differential in power. Throughout the entire movie an example that was presented in a sociological perspective is minority group; Experiences systematic advantages and has visible identifying trait. The group is self- conscious, and membership is usually determined at birth (Healey, Pg.9).
In sociology, there are three theoretical perspectives; symbolic interactionism, functional analysis and conflict theory. The major point of symbolic interactionism is to use symbols to help understand how we as a society view the world, and how we communicate with one another. In functional analysis, the major point is to look at society as a whole, constructed of various parts, or groups, that all have their own function. Lastly, conflict theory is the opposite of functional analysis. In this perspective, society is viewed as different groups, each competing for power, or dominance.
The novel Outsiders is written by S.E. Hinton. The novel is written about a young boy named ‘Ponyboy’ and in the area that he grew up in there was a gang called the ‘greasers’. In the novel ‘Ponyboy’ demonstrates loyalty in the way that the author constructs his actions towards his friends and the ‘greasers’. As a result of this, readers understand that loyalty is not only found in family members but also the people you treat as family, the sort of people that deserve loyalty. Hinton shows Ponyboy’s actions through the use of imagery to describe ‘Ponyboys’ attitude towards all the group members and the ‘Socs’.

Macrosociological theories are the study of an individual that provides an insight of their daily life. A sociologist can use this macro sociological to get a clear understanding people culture and societies in which their decision and lifestyle is affected. Emile Durkheim a French sociologist suggests that a person society is not the reflection of his characteristics. Durkheim stated that social law and institution will cause people to submit to the social fact because of the limit choose that is available them. However, an individual can find their direction of the social law, in which they can adapt to with less pain(Bohm & Vogel, 2011).
According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
