A sociological perspective of gender must first be discussed in order to best comprehend how gender can be constructed. Sociologists consider gender as a social construct, and is formed through the process of gender socialisation. Gender socialisation, as defined by McLennan, McManus and Spoonley (2010: 106), is the “process by which we learn to take up the social approved characteristics of the gender we were assigned at birth.” Through social interactions with family, friends, and the wider society, one will what society deems the most appropriate way to act for ones assigned gender.
