They provide exercise and entertainment all at once. Softball and baseball are two sports that are always being compared because they share the same concept. Baseball however is mainly enjoyed by men while softball is generally enjoyed by women. It is good to know the differences between the two sports if you plan to play, teach, and coach these games because there are different rules for each game. While softball fields and baseball fields are both diamond shaped, there distances and appearances are different. As obvious as it is, baseball has grass in the infield along with dirt while softball’s infield is all dirt. Tying into the pitching aspect, the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate is different for both sports. The distance in baseball is 60 feet and 43 feet in softball. Around the field from base to base baseball has a 90 feet distance while softball only has a 60 feet distance. For a ball to be considered a homerun, the perimeter around the field differs in softball and baseball. For softball the fence sits between 220 and 250 feet maximum and for baseball the minimum is 250 feet with a maximum of 400 feet in center field and a 325 feet maximum for foul poles. Both sports require nine players, umpires, and share the same concept. Nine players are required on the field to participate in a single game, and not many games are played unless there are at least nine players for each team. The umpires are required to make sure every rule is being followed. They also make judgment calls on plays and handle disciplinary actions. Both sports have the same concept. To win the game the concept is to hit the ball, run around the bases, and score the most runs before the time runs out whether through innings or if it is a timed game. Also in the game of softball and baseball each team is split into divisions. This is done because every softball or baseball team is not and will never be able to play every other softball or baseball team in the world so there are conferences.
