They were an abolitionist family, and they helped the Truth. The family bought her freedom for $25, which today is worth almost $800. Sojourner Truth was a slave from the very start of her life. She didn’t do anything to deserve the harsh treatment given to her, she was simply just born. Since she was born into slavery, this has impacted her entire life. Her real name was Isabella Baumfree, but she changed her name to Sojourner Truth when she was 46. She chose the name because Sojourner means to travel to new lands and preach the gospel, and Truth because she was to spread truth amongst the people. Additionally, Sojourner Truth was born in 1787 and died in 1883. In 1817, the Gradual Emancipation Law was passed in New York. This law declared that all enslaved people would be freed on July 4, 1827, ten years after passing the law. Slaves had to wait ten years after the law was passed so that slave owners gradually adjusted to the new law. On April 12, 1961, the Civil War began. During the Civil War, Truth assisted by giving troops much-needed materials, and recruiting African Americans to fight in the war.
