No other word is more fundamental and has more meaning in describing what Americans are and their ideologies than freedom, but prior to Civil War, the real meaning of freedom had to be learned. Can a country be a free nation if not everyone is enjoying freedom? The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave shows that prior to the Civil War, slaves had no rights or freedom. The book Across Five Aprils shows that the issue of slavery was so big, that it was causing division among families, more important it torn the country apart. Many politicians felt this was a white man’s war and slaves had no right to fight this war. His motive to free slaves from slave states is because then they are able to fight in the war with the Union one freed. Lincoln states in the Emancipation Proclamation, “such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States,” (Emancipation Proclamation, January 1st, 1863) . The reason for the Emancipation Proclamation, to Lincoln, was to get more people to join the Union in their fight in order to win the war. Nevertheless, this is important because this tells the audience that there is hope to still having freedom from knowing their reaction to it. It is also true because it engages the crowd to follow what is best for them.
