Not everyone and everything is how it seems. In the book Sold by Patricia McCormick, there are a lot of life-altering events that caused a huge change in Lakshmi's life. Betrayal happens even when one least expects it; Lakshmi experienced her own betrayal from Ama, Stepfather, and Unclehunband. The three types of betrayal Lakshmi undergoes are her Stepfather selling her to get some money, her mother betraying her because of her beliefs, and Unclehusband manipulating her into trusting him. Lakshmi is a thirteen-year-old girl from Nepal who lives in a small village with her family. She and her family live in a very secluded area, which makes it harder for them to live like a “normal family”. Due to her vulnerability, she trusted Unclehusband very fast and saw him as her only source of safety and would do anything he told her to do as she saw him as some type of parental figure due to her own parents abandoning her. Her view on how she feels about Unclehusband is shown in the following line,“ I am afraid to leave Unclehusband, who protected me from the bad border men and bought me a roti, and who is the only person I know in this strange dead city” (93). Uncle Husband never really cared for her and only took her from point A to point B for his own benefit. The biggest benefit being him getting money for taking Lakshmi all the way to the house. Unclehusband lied to her about her safety and lied to her about auntie coming back to see Lakshmi.
