In the “Children on the battlefield” article written by Marcie Schwartz explains that boys under 18 have served in many wars including the Civil War. They would join by lying about there age, having their parents sign them up, or there teachers would influence the recruiting officer to let them join. Some recruiting officers would look the other way so that they could met their quota. When they were enlisted they had many hard and dangerous jobs to do and also also served on military ships. The boys often were home sick and did not know what they wanted to do with there life.
210 Imagery and language Anthony Hill has written Soldier Boy using short and easy to understand sentences. Hill does this to keep the reader interested and to make the feeling of the book not boring but intriguing. Hill uses lots of quotes in his sentences to help describe different situations and give the reader a better understanding of the situation but also the characters and their personality. Hill also provides us with several pictures of Jim and his family. This changes the reader's ideas of what they imagined Jim and other character looked like and replaces the imagery previously used to help the reader picture each character and setting.

Mr. Martin describes his memories from a much later stage in his life at the age of 70 in the year 1830. This is the tales of the crippling weather conditions, terrible living conditions and war stories told by a young enlisted soldier during the war. Mr. Martin was born to a preacher and his wife in 1760 in western Massachusetts. The story begins when he was just a young boy who was sent to live with his grandparents on a farm.
The book, Soldier Boys, written by Walter Dean Myers is about a guy named Lonnie Jackson who loves to play basketball. He wants to become a professional basketball player and get out of Harlem. He is on a team with a coach that makes sure that Lonnie is pressured and does good. The author, Walter Dean Myers, has written over a hundred books and won the Coretta Scott King Award multiple times. Lonnie lives in Harlem, New York and hangs out at the Grant.

Even today, the gallantry of a few soldiers that won independence for the country is not only kept in the hearts of the people but run in the American blood to demonstrate acts of valor at times of war and hardships. One such story recorded in the history dates back to 1776, about a sixteen-year old juvenile, Joseph Plumb Martin, joined the Rebel Infantry and recorded his tribulations about forty-seven years in a memoir titled as “A Narrative of a Revolutionary Soldier”. The book mainly focuses on the sufferings through the tough situation he went through.
The Unbeatable Souls The Lost Battalion is based totally on a real story of an American battalion that was sent out to battle during the World War I. Major Charles Whittlesey, a New York lawyer, who ends up in the trenches of France having under his command mostly young, unexperienced men. When Whittlesey and his battalion of five hundred men are ordered to advance into the Argonne Forest they find themselves surrounded by Germans troops when the other battalions instantly withdrew, leaving Whittlesey’s battalion on his own. Confined behind enemy lines, Whittlesey’s battalion turned into the only force in the German army’s plans to move forward. Trapped and with no other way to rescue, Whittlesey is given an opportunity to surrender, but chose to continue fighting and keep his men together.
4 Different Aspects of New York and Sierra Leone Discussed in A Long Way gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Ishmael Beah presents a sharp comparison between the life in New York and Sierra Leone in his book A Long Way gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. These differences are based on his own personal experiences as a native of Sierra Leone and a resident in New York. Beah was a teenage soldier in his native town during the civil war that his country faced during the 1990’s. He participated in that war as a teenage soldier representing his government against the rebel fighters.
The book “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” is an autobiography about a boy named Ishmael who went through so much at a young age. This book should be read because it’s a story you could relate to and give you a perspective of how society is today than it was before and how it has affected people across the world. On the (front cover of the book) Carolyn See from the Washington Post says “Everyone in the world should read this book… We should read It to learn about the world and about what it means to be human.” She’s right, reading this book will provide you with facts you never known and could change the way you see things today.
In Soldier from the War Returning, Thomas Childers writes that “a curious silence lingers over what for many was the last great battle of the war.” This final battle was the soldier’s return home. After World War II, veterans came back to the United States and struggled with stigmatized mental illnesses as well as financial and social issues. During the war, many soldiers struggled with mental health issues that persisted after they came home.
On page 79 it states, “ Then the Fuhrer handed Dieter the medal.” Another symbol was Spencer’s heart. Spencer’s heart was the thing that made him join the army but also made him lose his life because he felt like he had to save the boy on the hill ( Dieter ). On page 22 it states, “ I think that you want to prove something to LuAnn Crow-ther.” In Solider Boys, two significant characters are Dieter and Spencer.
Present throughout the book is the theme of disillusionment. In the school, they’ve been told by their schoolmasters and parents that unless they join the war, they would remain cowards. They see propaganda after propaganda, all alluding towards the glory of battle and warfare. Out on the front, they realize that nothing was further from the truth. Their dreams of being heroes shattered, like when they compare themselves to the soldier on a poster in chapter 7.
Throughout the ages, wars have wreaked havoc and caused great destruction that lead to the loss of millions of lives. However, wars also have an immensely destructive effect on the individual soldier. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front written by Erich Maria Remarque, one is able to see exactly to what extent soldiers suffered during World War 1 as well as the effect that war had on them. In this essay I will explain the effect that war has on young soldiers by referring to the loss of innocence of young soldiers, the disillusionment of the soldiers and the debasement of soldiers to animalistic men. Many soldiers entered World War 1 as innocent young boys, but as they experienced the full effect of the war they consequently lost their innocence.
In the story “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh,” by R.Bradbury the author has the story in third person point of view. He uses symbolism using Joby ( who just turned fourteen) the drum, and the rhythm of the drum. He takes us through a quick summary of what Joby and the general were feeling on that sad night. While others might have had a good night’s sleep Joby and the general didn’t on this miserable night in Tennessee. Watching the peach blossoms fall while crying under the April night sky full of stars, Joby finds himself thinking about the day to come.
In the novel 'A Soldiers Tale' by M.K Joseph, the actions and dialogue of Charlie and Harry Berry help contribute to our understanding of Saul Scourby's ideologies and themes of the novel. They help us understand Saul through his actions and reactions to them and how he views them. Charlie contributes to our understanding of Saul by acting as a constant companion and helper. He is portrayed as an innocent man throughout the novel in comparison with Saul who has been hardened by war.
