The Athenians had a direct democracy which allowed the citizens to directly decide and vote for who they wanted to rule their country. In Athens there were three bodies of the government. The Assembly is the first branch which included all citizens that showed up to cast their vote. The Assembly decided what new laws would be and they made important decisions regarding war, laws, etc.

Of course there are the obvious differences between the two systems, such as different ages of voting eligibility, and the fact that gender does not decide someone’s ability and right to make important political decisions. The Greek philosopher Aristotle believed the people's government known as demokratia (democracy) was less desirable than other forms of authority such as aristocracy, polity, and monarchy. The root word "demos" has several meanings in the Greek Language. The term democracy means mob or assembly and Aristotle believed a democratic government was an authority ruled by the lesser educated or mob rule. During the period of Athenian Democracy, native male born citizens were strongly encouraged to participate in politics while women, slaves, and aliens were without decision-making priviledges. When you look at the literal definition of democracy in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, there is a decently large explanation. When looking at this definition and trying to decide whether the Athenian democratic system was truly democratic, one would have to go with the answer no. While it has been stated that Athens is the “cradle of democracy”, and that it was better than any of the other governments in the world, it was still a work in progress. The Athenian democracy, while it did give more power to the people, still left a lot of citizens out. In the book Persepolis, Satrapi uses the veil to show women's rights and how she was a rebel when she was young. In the beginning of the book she tells the reader about veil and how she didn't understand why she had to wear them. As she grows up she begins to understand how the world works and adapts to growing up and saying goodbye to her childhood. The veil is closely tied to Iran religion and why women have to wear it. She soon realizes the importance of the veil as she grows up and accepts it as a part of her life.
