Through the essay different facets of the poem will be analysed which bring forth a message and meaning to the poem. In the poem “Sometimes when it rains” by Gcina Mhlophe , the writer brings forward 5 critical point which she is concerned about which are human condition, homestead life, Education , carefree vs. hardship in life, fear vs. survival and Beauty vs. fortune. Gcina Mhlophe has many way of how she communicates the points with meaning and how she feels about the points by using different writing techniques. These techniques could be by using linguistic features, syntax, tropes and diction to bring forth her message. So what Is poetry and what does it need? Poetry is a form of literature which uses rhyme ,stanzas and poetic devices to get a message across in a short amount of words. What does poetry need it needs a message, tone, rhythm , mood and specific diction yet there are more but those are a few main aspects to poetry which add emphasis.

So from all the concerns of the world it seem hopeless yet there is hope which can be seen in these quotes “ to see the rainbow at the end of the rain” with this quote there is a change in the poem, showing there is hope. Also shows the writer has hope as she grew up in most of the concerning points yet she made something of herself and wishes everybody else has hope to “ then I wish that everyone else had something to smile about.
