Aaron Copland`s story of "How We Listen" and Mike Hamad`s "Song Schematics." Introduction Music is a philosophical issue, and a reader must understand various factors to understand and feel the music. Copland and Hamad express their understanding of music which involves the manipulation of notes and presents a more intellectual approach to enhancing the appreciation of music. In spite the fact that Hamad is creative and makes music magical, I believe that Copland presents more regarding the listener in a way that can improve the understanding of music general music listening process. In part one of the book it discusses the elements of music including the musical form in where songs utilize binary, call and response form, or ternary. One song that my brother and I grew up listening to, though it is a really old song, and uses call-and-response is “Shout” by The Isley Brothers. I believe that the song “Shout” uses call-and-response form because there is a constant question-and-answer pattern. “Sober Song” by Barton Sutter is arranged as a free verse poem with a rhyme scheme pattern within every other line. This poem describes a man saying his goodbyes to the memories he has had with alcohol. The poem’s beat and rhythm reminds the reader of a broken love song to the liquor that had once taken over his life. In lines in 1 through 4, we have a special pattern displayed not only in these lines, but throughout the entire poem.
The Poem “The Poet” by Tom Wayman is a poem that takes the reader through the physical characteristics of your average poet. The entirety of the “The Poet” consists of a list of 14 descriptors that could be used to describe the typical poet. Each of the descriptive phrases seems to be negative towards the unknown poet that he is talking about. Although the poem seems quite literal, a figurative message is portrayed though text, tone, structure and the literary devices used in the poem. To start off, the specific word usage that Wayman chose to use gives off the impression that poets have their drawbacks.
‘For What It’s Worth’ by Buffalo Springfield has a logical message because it is referring to the Sunset Strip Riots that took place in Hollywood during the 1960’s. People protested when they lost their civil rights due to a curfew law that was put into place. The song says, “Stop, children, what’s that sound. Everybody look- what’s going down?”
An example of this would be gladiators, fighting for glory in the name of their country. According to Carlin Barton in her paper, “Savage Miracles: The Redemption of Lost Honor in Roman Society and the Sacrament of the Gladiator and the Martyr”, the “self-immolation” (Barton, 42) of Scaevola, “reenacted by a condemned criminal in the arena,” (Barton, 42) inspired the poet Martial to write many powerful poems which served to further inspire other gladiators. We stick together, we can see it through cause you've got a friend in me.” Justification: This song relates to the relationship George and Lennie had because even though Lennie was always getting in trouble, George was beside him no matter what. Also, when they got to the ranch, Slim said to them that is not common to see such good friends like George and Lennie, who travel together and look out for each other.

After viewing the documentary and listening to each song by Rodgers and Hammerstein the song that made the most impact on me was the song “Some Enchanted Evening.” The song consists of very smooth and romantic melodies. Due to that I am a hopeless romantic I really enjoy the song lyrics and melody. The song was very catchy that I ended up singing the song for the rest of my day.

I am not a father so I cannot express the love for a child. “My son the Man” is a short 16-line poem. In the poem, Sharon compares her son to Houdini and explains how he has grown up. Sharon expresses deeply about her son growing up and leaving her and it is hard for her to watch her little boy become a man. I can kind of relate to this because my mom still looks at me as if I am a little boy.
When I first listened to this song, I felt that it was a song of majestic significance. The sound of “Aint no mountain high enough” made me feel happy as a listener, its uptempo beat and pleasing rhythm allowed me to feel a sense of hope. After researching this song in depth, and diving into its historical context, I have not changed my reaction to the song.
