Two Poems about Rain
The two poems “Song of the Rain” by Khalil Gibran and “The Voice of the Rain” by Walt Whitman, both talk about the wonderful gift of nature, rain, in different senses. Both the poets lived in the late 19th century.
Whitman is an American poet, as well as an essayist and journalist. He is one of the most influential poets of the American canon. He is also called the “father of free verse” and also “poet of democracy” His major work is a poetry collection called “Leaves of Grass.”
Gibran is a Lebanese-American poet and an artist. He was seen as political and literary rebel in his time. He is considered to be romantic poet. He is popularly known for his work, “The Prophet.” He is considered as the third best selling poet of all time.
Though both these poets are very much different in outlook, the poems about rain by each of them have a lot to be compared.
In the first poem, “The Voice of the Rain”, by Walt Whitman, he talks about a conversation he had with rain. The rain says that it is the “Poem of the earth”. It talks about itself and explains its life cycle. The poem talks more about what rain does on earth, how it rises from the sea, gather into clouds and shower down upon earth. The poem, in other words, explains rain cycle in literary terms. It says how rejuvenating the rain is for other beings on earth and how it spreads life on earth by watering the drought-ridden grounds.
