The song “I See Fire,” written by Ed Sheeran relates to Rebecca Nurse, a character in The Crucible. This song specifically relates to how Rebecca Nurse feels as she faces being hanged later in the play. Rebecca was accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams and since she did not admit to it she faced execution. As she is escorted to the gallows I imagine this song (if it were made in that time period) would be playing in her mind. Rebecca has very specific morals and would not admit to witchcraft even to spare her own life. Admitting to witchcraft isn’t what she believed God wanted her to do and in order to not betray her morals and her faith she did not succumb to the temptations of admitting. She refused to slander her good name, she was very well know in the village for being a woman of god and she did not want that image to change, especially when the accusation of witchery was false. …show more content…
Parris even says, “Let Rebecca stand upon the gibbet and send up some righteous prayer, and I fear she’ll wake a vengeance upon you.” Out of all the people even Parris was concerned that if the accusation be wrong and she is wrongfully killed that God himself would be angry with them. I believe Rebecca would specially relate to the lyrics “If this is to end in fire then we should all burn together” and “I see fire, blood in the breeze and I hope that you remember me.” Rebecca knew that it was not death that people should fear but Gods judgement. If one person starts lying, then the next, and so on and so forth they would all “burn together” in a sense. Rebecca never wanted the witch hunt, she didn’t even believe betty was bewitched in Act I. Rebecca wanted to remember but most of all she wanted to be part of the solution and part of the reason it all stopped. Although things did not go in her favor she was indeed an crucial part to the ending of the accusations. Both John Proctor and her sacrifice helped prove to the village folk that this witch hunt was
