Sonic Drive-In is an old-fashioned fast food chain that uses the retro diner style of the 80s to stand out from the crowd. It’s also known as being the largest drive-in fast food chain in the whole United States. Have you heard about it?
Sonic started out in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1953 by a man called Troy Smith. Smith had previously had three failed restaurants until he opened up the Top Hat Drive-In in 1953. It started out as just an abandoned root beer stand that served fast food goods like hamburgers and hotdogs. Over the next couple of years, he made many more improvements to his restaurant like intercoms, canopies, etc. Then in 1956, a man called Charlie Pappe became partners with Troy Smith and they opened another Top Hat Drive-In. Together, they came up with the slogan “service with the speed of sound” and so they seemed it was fitting to change the name to Sonic Drive-In 1958. They’ve mimicked those looks from the inside and out, and even when you’re there you feel like you traveled through time. This style pairs well with the retro-dressed servers, fitted in pairs of bright red and blue or bright red and white. The servers also bring your food out to you on rollerskates which is the most unique thing about the diner. In my experience with restaurants/fast food drive-in restaurants, I have never seen a server bring the food out on roller skates.
