In the story Sonny’s Blues Harlem, is a historically African American community and the birthplace of the author James Baldwin. The community plays an important role in the story as it can be seem as the cause of all the conflicts between the two brothers. Harlem is seen as a place to escape. Both brothers wanted to leave Harlem but for different reasons. The narrator left because he wanted a better life but leaving created the distance between him and his brother. Sonny wanted to leave because he wanted to get away from the drug as he explained to his brother "I couldn't tell you when Mama died, but the reason I wanted to leave Harlem so bad was to get away from drugs.” Both brothers trapped in a community filled with angry.
