“Mother Superior, the detective requests for your presence in the interview room,” one of the elder nuns said after knocking three times on Sister Helena’s door. A quick wave of anxiety came over her as she processed what the elder nun told her. Sister Helena did not expect to be called upon that soon. She thought she would be the last one to handle the detective that day. With eyes closed, she inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly. It would not be wise to keep the detective waiting. “I will be right out, sister. Thank you,” Sister Helena looked at her cap. As she walked toward the multipurpose hall, she recalled how happy she was when she was ordained in Sonora. It was one of the happiest days of her life. The sky was blue and the sun was bright. Her wedding was beautiful. She wore a short-sleeved white wedding gown and marched up the altar, as Sister Lily did. Unlike Sister Lily, she was able to complete the wedding and wear her ring. Sister Helena remembered how her hair danced in the wind as she rode the bus the next day and left Sonora. The air was sweeter on the other side of her former convent’s walls. Sister Helena’s thoughts were interrupted by Sgt. Benita’s face lit up when she saw Hicks. “What do you have there, Hicks?” Benita asked. Hicks sat in front of her as she brought out her specimen bag. He dropped the wine cork into the specimen bag and lay on his stomach. “Interesting, Hicks. Great job! Here you go,” Benita said as she gave her canine assistant some treats. Benita raised the clear specimen bag and examined the wine cork.
