In the article “Death at a Penn State Fraternity” by Caitlin Flanagan, the tragic story of Beta Theta Pi pledge Timothy Piazza’s last moments are recounted in great detail. Throughout the analysis of the situation, Flanagan subjects her audience to a substantial amount of heartbreaking details, as well as her opinion and speculation. Flanagan’s purpose in her writing of this article is to display the message that fraternity hazing is apart of a much greater problem in the fraternal system. She does this in a number of ways, including her interviews with other frat brothers such as Kordel Davis, and her stringent analyzation of Greek Life as a whole. What happened to Tim Piazza is in no way okay.
I am definitely a fan of the arts, in my spare time I love to listen to music. I also write, cook, engage in healthy debates, read and spend quality time with my loved ones. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has celebrated 103 years of excellence. After meeting and getting to know women of the sorority, conducting research and growing into a young African American woman, I have come to the conclusion that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is the sorority for me. The mission statement really speaks volumes to me, not only are college educated women a part of the sorority, but the primary focus is the Black community.

All of the activities she listed had one thing in common: alcohol. Erdely then goes into detail describing just how important getting drunk on the weekends is to students. “The challenge to drink to the very limits of one’s endurance has become a celebrated staple of college life. In one of the most extreme reports on college drinking thus far, a 1997 Harvard School of Public Health study found that 43 percent of college students admitted to binge drinking in the proceeding two weeks.
“People ask why I am in a sorority & I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, & obligation, or a way of life.
Through this involvement, I became highly interested in the recruitment process. For me recruitment was always a lot like doing ethnographic research which is the reason why I enjoyed both being a DePaul Ambassador and partaking in sorority recruitment. What I also enjoy about recruitment is the need for the attention to detail. Through my involvement in college I learned that I was able to successfully working in groups, as well as, on my own and honed in on my leadership abilities, as well as, gaining excellent conflict resolution skills and communication skills.
Starting college is a stressful process and a big change. College students worry about meeting tons of people and making new friends. Some students decide to go through sorority recruitment in order to find lifelong friends and sisters. Others go through recruitment to find people who accept them for being unique. College students find their home when finishing sorority recruitment.

As a member of several honor societies in high school, I participated in many community service events and hoped to continue serving the community once I began college. I joined the RPI Zeta Eta chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta Women’s Fraternity during my freshman year. Being a part of Alpha Gamma Delta has allowed me to continue serving the community. Throughout the school year, we participate in several events including Relay for Life, Volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, and several philanthropy events set up by our chapter and other Greek houses and organizations on campus.
Many people have heard the rumors about hazing happening on college campuses. The rumors are particularly associated with Greek Organizations. While most Greek Organizations, such as National Panhellenic Conference and the North American Interfraternity Conference, have policies forbidding hazing, it is still very prevalent within Greek life. Hazing practices within Greek organizations is something that has been happening and will continue to happen as a way to initiate new members into these elite organizations. When it comes to talking about hazing within Greek organizations, first the terms “hazing” and “fraternities and sororities” must be defined.
I genuinely care about my sorority. I care about our reputation, as well as the safety and well-being of my sisters. Going through rush as a sophomore gave me a unique perspective about joining a sorority. I wasn’t there solely to make friends or go to socials and date nights. I was there to take advantage of everything a sorority had to provide for me at UGA.
College is an opportunity for students to try new activities and discover where they fit in. Some students find themselves fitting into certain clubs, athletic teams, academics, music, and Greek life. Students can freely join a fraternity or sorority if one chooses to, as long as they meet the requirements. Students have the opportunity to rush and learn about the different chapters on campus. There is endless information to learn about each individual chapter.
Some might say that the use of alcohol is common place and nothing more than a stepping stone in the ritual of being a college student. The problem is the consequences of binge drinking and excessive drinking should not be accepted as “ritual” or common place. Some consequences are extremely problematic and not only impact the individual but have lasting consequences for the college environment in a global sense.
Students become “obsessed with their studies” and nothing else becomes important (Zinsser). This produces an accumulation of students who don’t spend time to do extracurricular activities. The mixture of pressure from peers and from one’s self allows a chain of events that lead to undesirable
