Introduction The Southport Volunteer Fire Department is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization serving the residents of both the Village of Southport and the Town of Fairfield, Connecticut. The current mission statement of the Department is “through leadership, dedication, integrity, professionalism, and education the Southport Fire Department strives to protect the lives and property of the residents and visitors of Southport, Fairfield and wherever else called upon to serve during times of need.” Sadly, over the last several years, the Department has suffered a precipitous decline in membership, due to the aging (and retirement) of current members and a lack of significant number of new recruits, all of which makes it difficult for …show more content…
For her, the high point was getting initiated into the Department. Becoming initiated as a member of the Department provided the rookie with a sense of pride, and it was the first time she could tell that her father was extremely proud of her. Her father had previously served as a fighter in Israel when he in the Israeli Defense Force. Initiation enable the rooking to continue a family tradition of provided a vehicle through which she and her father could bond. Overall, no matter where along their journey within the Department, each interviewee identified a high point focused upon a sense of pride and a sense of tradition in becoming a firefighter. The feelings provided to each interviewee by each high point only fostered and fueled the impetus that caused each interviewee to initially volunteer as a member of the Department. This only confirmed how much each person who is a member of the Department is really proud of what they do and has a sense of pride in their work along with the conviction that they are each doing something for the greater good of their
