05-01-2017 Southwest Airlines is a leading U.S. airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. Southwest Airlines, originally named Air Southwest is considered to be the world’s biggest budget airline. Southwest Airlines was originally established in 1966 by a number of Texas investors, including Rollin King, Herbert D. Kelleher and M. Lamar Muse who gathered $560,000 in order to build the airline. In its initial stages, Southwest Airlines received permission from the Texas Aeronautics Commission (the managerial figure in charge of managing aeronautics) to fly between three major Texas cities, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Threatened by the company’s success, three competing airlines attempted to sue Air Southwest to hinder the airline from flying. One of Air Southwest’s investors, Herb Kelleher was a lawyer who fought against these three competing airlines in the U.S. Supreme Court and in December 1970, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Air Southwest. Six months later, Air Southwest became Southwest Airlines and officially began business on June, 18, 1971. Under the control of President M. Lamar Muse, Southwest Airlines provided six daily oundtrip flights between Dallas and San Antonio in addition to, 12 daily roundtrip flights between Dallas and Houston.
