There has been a debate about whether Ancient Athens or Sparta was a better Greek city-state. In my opinion, Ancient Athens was a better Greek city-state. One reason Ancient Athens was a better city-state is because of its culture. Another reason it was a better city-state is because of the type of government Ancient Athens had. Lastly, Ancient Athens had a variety of jobs available to its citizens. Some people think that Sparta was a better city-state because of its military program; however, there are many more reasons Ancient Athens was a better city-state.

Usually, men were farmers, fishermen, soldiers, government workers, teachers, actors, and craftsmen. For women, their jobs were homemakers. Another job women had was to raise children and cook the meals. Farmers in Ancient Athens grew olives, barley, wheat, and grapes. Athenians made the barley into porridge or grounded it into flor for bread. The olives were used to make olive oil. The olive oil was used for cooking or for oil in lamps. The grapes they grew were used for wine, or the grapes were dried into raisins. On average, a farmer made two drachmas a day. Athenian fishermen caught anchovies, tuna, sea bass, and red mullet. The poor could only afford anchovies while the rich could afford tuna, sea bass, and red mullet. Ancient Athenian teachers’ taught boys while girls were taught by their mothers. Actors in Athens had multiple roles. They would use masks so the audience could tell them apart. Males were the only actors, but they did play female roles.
