The role of women in Athens and Sparta varied tremendously. Women in Athens had little to no rights at all while women in Sparta had several privileges. Athenian women were controlled by their Kyrios and were suppose to work around the household. Women were unimportant in the Athenian society while Spartan women were considered very smart and educated. Spartan women were able to own property and were free from doing chores. There are many differences between the statuses of women between these two city-states in Ancient Greece. Women did not go to any athletic shows in Athens. The only thing women could do in Athens without their husband getting involved was participating freely in religion. Women were involved in rituals that related to marriage, childbirth, and birth. Lady’s were able to worship, pray, and hymn in the Athenian society. Therefore, women in Athens had know say at all in their lives and where seen as less important in the Athenian society. They were excluded from the public and were given many tasks to do in their lives from such a young age. Athenian women viewed Spartan women as not smart people because they had a very different lifestyle compared to them, “Most Athenians regarded the Spartans as dull, unintelligent people whose way of life was slow, old-fashioned and unsophisticated.” (pg.12) Women in Sparta had many more privileges in life and were able to be educated. They were able to build their intellect and prosper in life. Spartans thought by having a good and healthy lifestyle was very important in life. Women in Sparta worked very hard to maintain a masculine body by having intense physical training. It was not important in the Spartan society for the husband to run the family. Their husbands were around twenty-five. They tried to marry close in age so they could be both mature and not like the Athenian way where the man was twice the age of his wife. The groom was required to live with his army group till he reached thirty years old. He would occiasonly sneak out to see his wife during this time. The wife had to been old enough to raise children and maintain the household. Fathers did not play a role in their child’s life at all since they were in war most of the time.
