I am writing to you because I recently read your book Speak, and I wanted you to know how I feel and what I have learned. I also have a couple of questions about some specific characters and sections of the book. To begin with, I really enjoyed reading your book because I felt like I could connect with the main character Melinda. I’m also a freshmen in highschool, so I see the same issues happen to people around me that Melinda sees or struggles with. It can be scary as a freshmen knowing you’re the youngest in the school, and Melinda came across as afraid. There can be a lot of drama in high school about which girls you are friends with and who you hang out with. After Melinda called the police and busted a summer party, many students don’t like her anymore, and some even bully her. She lost all of her old friends and has a hard time making new friends because everyone is still mad at her. This is relatable because many girls change who they are friends with over the years. You describe all of the characters so well that I was able to make a mental picture of each one while reading. I don’t normally like to read, but I enjoyed reading this book. As I mentioned before, I thought it made the plot more interesting how the problems and characteristics of some of the main characters were relatable and similar to how school is today. I thought the way you decided to write the book was also cool. Each chapter was short and the setting constantly changed, so it made reading it more interesting. I felt that it was suspenseful at moments, especially when IT came into the story. As a reader, I wanted to know who he was and why Melinda was so afraid of him or didn’t want to be near him. It wasn’t until the very end that we I found out who he was and what he did to her. Every time you mentioned IT, I was so curious who he was, but I think it made the ending more
