After reading the novel Twisted, written by Laurie Halse Anderson, I have become more aware of how different emotions and attitudes that people have can positively or negatively affect how they’re viewed by society. Furthermore, an individual’s attitudes and actions can also change their perspective of the world and the quality of their life. Early on in the book, we are introduced to the main character Tyler, who is an emotional, unpopular, and insecure seventeen year old senior who is hoping for things to change. Throughout the story, we follow his emotional rollercoaster filled with his thrilling highs and devastating lows. After researching astrology signs and their true meanings about specific traits, I have decided that Tyler fits within the Cancer symbol.
The book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park explores the life of Salva, an 11-year-old boy living in South Sudan, after he is displaced by the Sudanese Civil War. First, in 1985, Salva and his classmates are instructed to run into the bush to escape the gunfire that was heard not far from the school. Then, he joins a group of travelers who are walking away from the war in Sudan, but they abandon him in a barn one evening while he is still asleep. After spending a few days with the barn's owner, Salva is sent away with a different group of travelers, must of whom accept him grudgingly. The group walks for a month toward Ethiopia, and eventually they arrive to the Itang refugee camp in Ethiopia.
"Crossing the Swamp," a poem by Mary Oliver, confesses a struggle through "pathless, seamless, peerless mud" to a triumphant solitary victory in a "breathing palace of leaves. " Oliver's affair with the "black, slack earthsoup" is demonstrated as she faces her long coming combat against herself. Throughout this free verse poem, the wild spirit of the author is sensed in this flexible writing style. While Oliver's indecisiveness is obvious throughout the text, it is physically obvious in the shape of the poem itself.
Speak The book I am responding to is called Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book is about a teenage girl named Melinda Sordino, who begins her high school year with a big secret. Over the summer she and her friends went to a party where Melinda was raped, she called the police, causing her friends and everyone at the party to reject her. Later Melinda befriends a girl named Heather, a new student at her school.
People in Southern Sudan have dirty water, wild animals, the many wars and a lot more hardships they need to face. In the book “A long walk to water” by: Linda Sue Park, is a book that takes place in Southern Sudan and features all the hardships Salva and Nya had to face while living there such as wild animals, wars, fights through tribes, lack of water and food. Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.

Before the rebels took over Salva’s village he went to school everyday. Each day after school his mother would always be waiting for him at home with a bowl of warm milk. In the historical fiction novel The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis, a girl named Parvana lived in Kabul, Afghanistan, during the Taliban rule. Before the Taliban took over Parvana’s town, it was a very beautiful city with restaurants, movie theaters, and shops.
Oftentimes when reading texts about liberation, whether the liberation is physical, metaphorical, or otherwise, there is a tendency to expect an overcoming narrative of sorts. Namely, when presented with a figure that is suffering, an audience expects a clean ending. However, concerning memoirs, this isn’t always the case. If anything, overcoming narratives within autobiographical texts can flatten out the nuances and struggles that are presented within, making the arc of the text seem flat and unconvincing. This is far from the case with Jimmy Santiago Baca’s autobiography, A Place to Stand.
It is a strange thing to think that a rich and greedy woman could have large similarities to a poor slave girl, taken away from her family at such a young age. Yet, this theory is not completely far-fetched. The story “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson opens up revealing Isabel’s character to the audience, and allows a first impression. She’s a curious and kind-hearted girl who has a younger sister, and her master had just previously died. She was promised freedom in her master’s will, but was sold at a tavern by her master’s nephew.
The food availability, safe water access, and medical treatment in Sudan is much different than what is available in the United States. Currently in South Sudan, around forty eight percent of children are underweight, and only twenty seven percent of all people in Sudan have access to safe drinking water. In the book A Long Walk To Water written by Linda Sue Park, the main characters Salva and Nya struggle to survive. However, Salva and Nya both show hope as they carry on through Sudan's water crises, food shortages, and medical emergencies. Sudan has had many wars over the last few decades, resulting in around two million people to be displaced from their families.
Mass shootings In the article, “The Fear We Live With” by Jeva Lange (2018) she explains how mass shootings have affected many lives in the United States. She points out that people are very afraid of how the shootings are happening too frequently and America does not care to do anything about it. Mass shootings happen too much in the world and there is not one way to fix them.

How to tame a wild tongue: Response Essay. The story written by Gloria Anzaldua, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” is remarkable. The way this story analyzes the critical social issues such as cultural imperialism, low self-esteem, and identity formation. Anzaldua exposed her feelings and experiences supporting them with historical facts in a very effective way.
This passage is another life lesson to be learned. The author is blatantly telling us that we’re not important. However, I don’t think he is literally saying that we are unimportant, I think what he is trying to tell us is that us human beings have a tendency to think that we are than we actually are. There was a quote said by George Watsky, “There’s seven billion, forty six million people on the planet, and most of us have the audacity to think we matter.” In the second part of the quote where it says, “…someday the load we’re carrying with us may help someone…”
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a mystical and illogical fairytale presented in the form of a play. Written with various poetic forms and rhyme schemes, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was an instant classic. Throughout the play, Shakespeare uses a dream as a common theme and important idea. From the ingenious concept that the play as a whole was a dream dreamt by the audience to Bottom’s ‘dream’ that he was a donkey that fell in love with a Fairy queen, it is apparent that the whole story is based around dreams and their unnatural and strange qualities.
