In the years leading up to the American Revolution, there was a tense relationship between the colonists and their British rulers. Large gatherings in the colonies to discuss the grievances caused by the actions of the British were common. Patrick Henry applies the rhetorical strategies of allusions and repetition in his “Speech in the Virginia Convention” to assert that the colonists should believe fighting for their freedom and rights is necessary and that they must fight as soon as possible. Although Henry has rather radical beliefs in comparison to the other members of the Convention, he connects with them through religious and literary allusions that are able to convince them of his assertions. If I were asked to get the attention of my peers for a speech, I would first consider my audience because I have different groups of people I consider peers. I would also take into consideration the topic of the speech and utilize an appropriate attention grabber. For example, if I am giving a motivational speech, I might use the word courage. I could either incorporate that word into a powerful quote or tell a story about how courage “changed my life” or why it is a “necessary virtue” on the path to success. I think the most important part, in addition to the attention grabber, is to keep the audience’s attention throughout the speech.
Attention First and foremost, for deliver the speech speaker need to gain the attention of the audience since if we do not have their attention we can not persuade the audience ,speaker can grabs the audience’s attention and orients them to the issue use a humorous or dramatic story, a question, a quotation, a startling statement, etc. For example, in a speech designed to get the audience to concerning about the obesity from unhealthy food ,Jamie Oliver open the speech by using a dramatic opening “Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead from the food that they eat.” Jamie grabs the audience attention by questioning how in short time four people can die from the food they eat. 2.

The topic I chose for my informative speech was gun violence in the United States. I chose this topic so that others may be aware of all the violence related to a firearm and to inform them of the dangers associated with a gun in the United States. Everyday we turn on the news and hear about a new tragedy involving some sort of firearm. Therefore choosing gun violence as the topic for my speech seemed appropriate. I believe my topic opened the eyes of my audience because of the effect it had on them, especially being that I myself was a victim to gun violence and went through the whole ordeal of being hospitalized and all other effects that follows after being shot.
