In the final hours of his presidency, President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered a phenomenal speech that shocked the nation. President Eisenhower warned the people of the United States of the impending dilemmas approaching the future. He offered America advice to mitigate the damages of inevitable catastrophes awaiting. After half a century of complicated problems including two world wars and the great depression, the people had experienced enough hardship. They blatantly ignored the plea of President Eisenhower because it is easier to pretend ignorance than to initiate change. Needless to say, it is important to solve the problems life presents. However, Eisenhower noticed that in doing such problem-solving American politicians often get carried away. He said, “As we peer into society's future, we-you and I, and our government-must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering, for our own ease and convenience, the precious resources of tomorrow.” Regrettably, Covid-19 gave an excuse for the government to greedily spend absurd amounts of money. “Over the span of 3 years, the U.S. spent 4.6 trillion dollars in relief response to Covid” (USAspending.gov). In comparison, that is over 2/3s of the annual budget in 2022. While a portion of this money went to necessary problem-solving expenditures. Lots of this money was spent on unrelated interests such as foreign aid, language preservation, and expansion of Obamacare. In fact, only 10% of the latest covid-19 relief bill was used to combat the virus (poseyhouse.gov). At first, the covid-relief bills were targeted at solving the nation's problem of the pandemic. Over time, politicians started to pander to the people resulting in excessive expenditures being heaped onto our national debt. President Eisenhower gave the nation a prophetic forewarning and the people failed to change anything. Standing in post-covid times it’s easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. Another crisis will arise in the future. Eisenhower's warning is still applicable today. It’s imperative that the U.S. finally does what Eisenhower suggested long ago. In the final moments of his political career, Eisenhower leaves the stage with a simple promise saying, “As a private citizen, I shall never cease to do what little I can to help the world advance along the road.” Like Eisenhower, everyone must commit to doing their part. Force the changes Eisenhower wished for so long ago on our politicians. Don’t let history repeat
