Analysis of the poem Spellbound by Emily Bronte The speaker in the poem Spellbound by Emily Bronte uses sensory images and figurative language to create a weary feeling among the readers of the situation. The descriptions of the circumstances in the poem indicate a looming storm that has the potential of destruction. Unfortunately, the speaker is in a situation where they cannot leave to a safer place and they are bound by some unexplained forces to the storm. The use of imagery and figurative language assist the readers to critically think about the descriptions and look deeper into the poem and come up with insights that surpass the literal meaning of the words. In the last stanza, it clearly states that the speaker is not willing to leave the situation, ‘I will not, cannot go’ (Bronte 3; 3). The speaker/author is aware of the dangerous/critical situation in which they are; unfortunately, they cannot leave to a safer place. They are bound to the storm by forces with which they are familiar; this fact leads to the title of the poem ‘Spellbound.’ The fact that Bronte starts off by stating that the speaker cannot leave gives an indication that the situation is out of hand for the speaker. However, towards the end of the poem it is clear that the speaker can leave the situation it is just that they do not want to leave. The figurative language in this sense allows the reader to have critical thought of the situation and come up with an interpretation of their own. Through the sensory images and the tone of the poem, the speaker has a deep awareness of the forces that are binding them to the impending storm.
