When someone is writing a report in the field of law enforcement is essential that the information inside the report is accurate. How can someone be trusted to have accurate information inside of their report if they have misspellings? In law enforcement there are some words that can definitely be tricky to spell, however, if someone is unsure about how to spell a word they need to do the professional thing and look up the correct way of spelling the word. Today there are many different misspelling inside of law enforcement reports that need to be corrected in order to have a credible image as an author.

Another word that is commonly misspelled inside police reports is “possession” (Redwine, 2003, p. 17). Possession is defined as having something in your control. Possession would be used in a police report to talk about possession of illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia or anything else someone possesses illegally. It is understandable that an officer would misspell possession because there are 4 s’s and when you sound the word out to some people it could sound like only 2 s’s. Paraphernalia is another word that is commonly misspelled in police reports (Redwine, 2003, p. 17). Paraphernalia is defined as the equipment needed for a certain activity. The usage of paraphernalia in a police report would be involved with drugs and items used in association with them. If an officer misspells this word is is most likely because of that r between the e and n most people would pronounce the word “para-fa-nalya” and that leaves out the “r” sounds where it should be. Lieutenant is another word that is commonly misspelled in police reports. Lieutenant is an officer rank inside of the police force or military.
