According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook sports broadcasters are required to have a high school diploma; however, a Bachelor’s degree is optional. A Bachelor’s degree in communications, broadcasting, and journalism is highly recommended which will only increase acceptance rate (Bureau). The National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers recommend taking the online exam to receive official certification for sports broadcasting (Careers). A broadcaster should highly consider completing these courses and taking the exam if she plans on getting the job. Sports broadcasters are to have experience with communications media, the English language, telecommunications, and customer personal service (“Radio”). Broadcasting experience is gained by working in school announcements, radio stations, and local sports events (Careers; “WUSF”). Having already worked with most of the equipment and met expectations, new broadcasters will have an edge and provide satisfactory work. Education for broadcasting is minimal, but heavy training should be expected such as becoming familiar with equipments and understanding and applying basic rules and information for the sports (Bureau). A sports broadcaster’s type of market will affect the amount of experience and the level of the sport; therefore environments can vary from major arenas, colleges, and high schools (Careers; Schneider 7). Within the environment sportscasters work in television and radio booths or special media sections alongside spectators, athletes, and the live action (Careers). A broadcaster must be able to work in any type of arena or conditions based off her selective sport without any interferences with her job. Most sportscasters need an open schedule or availability at all times throughout the day; however the time of the event can vary from sport to sport (Careers). Full or part time is available for applicants due to broadcasts lasting all throughout the day with working on weekends and holidays being frequent (Bureau). Traveling to different arenas, being at close hand with the crowd, and working all day long can be stressful on a broadcaster which can lead to poor performances while broadcasting. The environment can be taxing, but the income made surpasses the
