Islam is a monotheistic religion rooted deep in history. This religion is often considered to be a rival of both Christianity and Judaism alike. Muslims believe in a certain god called Allah and their holy book is called the Koran. Most historians believe that Islam originated in Mecca and Medina at the start of the 7th century. Muslims will tell you; however, that Islam was the original faith of others, known as prophets. Some of these “prophets” are Jesus, David, Moses, Abraham, Noah, and Adam. Muhammed could be considered the “main prophet” of Islam and is credited with the religion’s start. Muhammad began to have so-called divine revelations by the time he reached forty years old. These were basically dreams or hallucinations that Muhammed interpreted as divine instructions from Allah through the angel, Gabriel. He began teaching these dreams to the people of Mecca and gained a couple of followers. He was protected by his uncle, Abu Talib, who was an influential member of the city. However, as soon as Talib died, Muhammed had to flee for his life to the city of Medina along with his followers. This flight was known as the Hegira. During the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah Muslims flock to the holy city of Mecca. Every able-bodied muslim is required to go to mecca at least once in their lives. When going on this pilgrimage the muslim must wear special clothing called Ihram which is basically two white sheets. Upon arrival the muslims are required to walk around the Kaaba seven times then touch the Black Stone which is called Istilam. They must then walk seven times between mount safa and mount Marwah which is called Sa’ye. After doing all of these things the muslims have to partake in a ritual which spiritually stones the devil.
