Sputnik and Russian innovation had an impact on American education because when Russia created Sputnik, the Russians thought we didn’t do it before them because we weren’t educated enough. Russia did not think we were capable to create a satellite, so our government changed the American education system. “If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the Mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war.” This quote shows that the Russians did not approve of the American education which, is why we changed it. This quote also shows that maybe we took this as a threat from the Russians to change our education system. The Risk article talks about how “the Japanese make automobiles more efficient” and “the South Koreans recently built the worlds most efficient steel mill”. Our education system has gone down with it. “The fact is, they claim that only a minority of American children, maybe 15 or 20 percent, have the intelligence to profit from a concentration of academic subjects in public school, that the other 80 or 85 percent must be provided with other kinds of programs.” This quote explains that our education system did not change for the better. Many kids are not getting the help they need to succeed in the work life.
