Srebrenica, Bosnia in 1995 was a horrific place of death and torture. In July of 1995 the horrific killings of many men took place. The Srebrenica Massacre created fear in many people. Many people had to flee the city to be safe from the brutal killings and torture. An analysis of what caused the massacre, what happened during the massacre, and how people were affected will enable one to understand the tragic story of the Srebrenica Massacre.
There are many causes to why the Srebrenica Massacre took place. Research shows “ On July 11, however, Bosnian Serb forces advanced on Srebrenica, overwhelming a battalion of Dutch peacekeeping forces stationed there. Serbian forces subsequently separated the Bosniak civilians at Srebrenica”(History.com). During the Srebrenica Massacre the Bosnian War was going on and this war caused the massacre in Srebrenica. Research shows “The U.N. had declared these enclaves safe havens in 1993, to be disarmed and protected by international peacekeeping forces”(History.com). Many people took refuge in Srebrenica because it was a safe place. The worst was yet to come. News report said “For three days, ethnic Serb forces gunned down Muslim boys and men in and around Srebrenica. The sight of their broken bodies dumped into mass graves, belongings lining roadsides, and carnage strewn across fields forced the world's eyes onto a broader campaign of ethnic cleansing” (Hanna, Brumfield, and Amanpour). During this massacre over 8,000 men and boys were killed and many women were raped, this massacre was one of the worst in Europe’s history since World War II.
