St. Francis of Assisi From all the things that St. Francis has made an impact on and changed in our world today. One that hits home for me personally is his love and admiration for God’s creation of the animals and nature. Whenever one of my guinea pigs or pets died, my family and I would always burry them under the area where our statue of St. Francis over looks. St. Francis not only had an extreme appreciation for the preservation of God’s nature and to cherish the animals of the world, he was also known for many more things. Francis was born in the city Assisi, which is in the county of Umbria, Italy in 1181. He was one of seven children born to Pietro. “St. Francis’s name was originally Giovanni di Bernardone, but when he was a kid, his father (Pietro), decided to instead start calling him Francesco” (National Catholic Register). His wife was Pica de Bourlemont. Not only was St. Francis born in Assisi, he also grew up in Assisi. Assisi is a town in central Italy that was taken over by the Romans. Assisi, Italy is “a town and commune of Italy in the province of Perugia in the Umbria region, on the western flank of Monte Subasio.” (Wikipedia Assisi). Francis founded the Franciscan order. The Franciscan order is an order that still thrives today. One day, St. Francis heard a sermon that changed his life, and many other people’s lives, forever. The sermon that changed St. Francis’s life so drastically was about Matthew 10:9. Matthew 10:9 talks about how “Christ told his followers that they should go forth and proclaim that the Kingdom of Heaven was upon them, that they should take no money with them, nor even a walking stick or shoes for the road.” (Wikipedia St. Francis). Francis was inspired to devote himself to a life of poverty. Wearing almost nothing, St. Francis began to preach repentance. St. Francis finally gained his first follower: Bernardo di Quintavalle. Within a year Francis had eleven followers. St. Francis preached to people who didn’t have much importance or were just the average day person. It was even more unique because he never had the license to do so. In 1209 he made a rule for all who followed him, the Regula primitive, also known as, the “Primitive Rule”. The rule was “To follow the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ and to walk in his footsteps.” (Eternal Word Television Network). In 1209, Francis led his first eleven followers to Rome to seek permission from Pope Innocent III to found a new religious Order.
