Saint Francis of Assisi was born Francesco Bernardone in 1181. He was born into a rich Italian family in Umbria, Italy. In 1201, Saint Francis was imprisoned by Perugians at the age of 20. His capture lead to him questioning his spiritually. After the war, his compassion for his new-found spiritually lead him to start giving away money to the poor and help the unfortunate. When Francis was twenty-five, he heard a voice in the church of San Damiano that said, “Go and repair my house, which you see if falling down.” Francis sold a bale of his father’s cloth to pay for building materials. The conflict between father and son resulted in Francis renouncing his inheritance. In 1209, Francis founded the Franciscan Order. The Franciscan Order grew to 5,000 friars and rapidly spread throughout Western Europe. While on a retreat on Mount La Verna in the fall of 1224, Francis said to have experienced the first case of the Stigmata, which left the wounds of Christ’s Crucifixion on his hands, feet, and sides. During this time, Francis also become ill and blind. Francis died at the age of forty-five on October 3, 1226 in Portiuncula, Italy. When my family’s pets, Misty and Gizmo, passed away we prayed to Saint Francis to watch over our pets until we could be with them again. It gives me peace to know that they’ll be watched over and taken care of. Another reason I chose Saint Francis of Assisi was because, he was born in Umbria, Italy. Being half-Italian myself, I relate to the culture that he is worshiped in. Along with knowing about Saint Francis of Assisi, I have also seen many statues of him and they have made me very interested in him and what he is known for.
