On January 31, 1735, Michel-Guillaume-Saint- Jean de Crèvecoeur was born in Caen, Normandy, France. According to biographers, he was a man with a mysterious past because his writings implied puzzling details about his life. Crèvecoeur, who is one of the most observant diplomats of the American values, was a French American farmer and writer during the late 18th century. At the age of nineteen, he sailed to England where he lived with his distant relatives in order to achieve a Jesuit education and learn English. In 1775 to 1759, Crèvecoeur enlisted in the Canadian militia, served as a cartographer with Louis Montcalm’s army, and resigned after he got wounded in the defense of Quebec. After the American Revolution, Crèvecoeur’s literature works became an uncontrollable demand for all American things because his Enlightenment principles inspired a vision of new fertile land, wealth, promising job opportunities where innovativeness succeeded over materialism. Crèvecoeur admits that “it is here, then, that the idle may be employed, the useless become useful, and the poor become rich.” In the writing of Letters, Crèvecoeur describes the social principles of America’s new society as the life of an individual’s work ethic, responsibility, and anti-intellectualism. Crèvecoeur presented Europeans with a new positive perspective of opportunities for peace, freedom, and pride in America. Crèvecoeur analyzed the religious problems of the New World, outlined the steps of new immigrants, and revealed the tragedy of slavery and the Native American removal. Furthermore, Crèvecoeur expressed a contemporary characteristic of society as the common similarities and sympathies of neighbors through a set of natural connections.
