St. Vincent was born in 1580. He grew up in France to a poor family. He had a normal life and did as he was told. He went to the University of Toulouse for theological studies and was later ordained a priest in 1600. A few years later, on a voyage from Marseilles to Narbonne he was stopped and captured by African Pirates. These Pirates had him put into slavery. This term lasted about two years until he was helped escape by a former priest named Guillaume Gautier. They secretly boarded a small vessel and sailed to Aigues-Mortes in the year of 1607 St. Vincent returned to France and then immediately left for Rome. With the help of his friend St. Louise de Marillac rose the “Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul”. He joined the Vincentians and served 28 years as spiritual director of the Convent of St. Mart of Angels until his death in 1660. I chose him because he is a very honorable man that changed the lives of many and played roles in showing others the greatness of true charity and humility. He radiates many aspects of a Christian lifestyle. One that I wish to sway towards is his ability to care for others. He cares for others in a way that most people don’t.
