1.0 Introduction
Operating a successful business requires adequate application of best business management practices. Rao and Srinivasulu (2013, p. 74) suggests that management is critical for organisational success, especially now due to the evolving business environment and struggles of organisational behaviour. Managers have to, therefore, consider all aspects of business – both internal and external – to navigate the business environment efficiently (Kraja & Osmani, 2015, p. 123). All these factors influence the performance of a business, and while the internal factors can be controlled, the external may not be controlled. The owners – Faidi and Fatima Khan – approached me to be their management consultant to provide assistance on how to develop the business to success. An analysis of the business reveals several issues related to management that hinder the salon from maximizing its potential. For instance, the salon’s profitability cannot be determined because of no financial reporting, lack of strategic plan, demotivated staff, free hair cut services provided to friends of staff and lack of a customer care management program to determine how the customers feel about the services provided. The working conditions are like to cause burnout, which emanates from physical, cognitive and emotional exhaustion. The fact that it is difficult to determine the profitability of the business, may suggests that the staff do not get pay increase, which is necessary for motivating more effort. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can be used to explain the situation in organisations about the need to motivate individual behaviour due to the specific needs that humans have such as basic needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self-actualization (Ozguner & Ozguner, 2014, p. 208). If the employees want to attain specific needs and can only do so through their salaries, then they should be compensated well in order to exert more effort. This will enhance the performance and profitability of the salon. Hence, by applying an appraisal system, the managers can determine who to reward based on the work they do.
