Stage 2 Workplace Practices – Personal Reflection
Throughout my time at Romeo’s Retail Group Foodland I have developed my understanding of business and enterprise through working casually. I have developed an understanding of the business structure and what the hierarchy of employees actually is. A visual representation will be used to show the levels of employment at Romeos Foodland.
The flowchart above demonstrates that Romeo’s Retail Group Foodland is a complex business. There are over 35 Romeo’s Foodland stores throughout South Australia and New South Wales. Knowing this makes it seems suitable that there are so many people in managing positions for one store.

There are often times when a manager is not nearby to help with a situation. I have learned to show independence and initiative when I am faced with a situation of this manner. Being able to Identify and solve problems independently is a skill that naturally develops whilst being employed in a retail workplace. An example of me using initiative is when customers ask for products that aren’t on the shelf, and I use my existing knowledge and have an educated guess as to showing them where it is. For example if a customer asked for Glucose gel, I could not exactly tell them where in an aisle it is located, but I do know that sugars and cooking products are in aisle 5, so I would direct them there. Another example of using my initiative would be when I contact my workplace prior to arriving, if I believe I’ll arrive late. This is done out of common courtesy but also because I know that I have dedicated myself to the workplace and that if I am rostered on, it is my duty to not only arrive on time but to complete the shift in its entirety. At work I also look for opportunities to take action in reporting hazards or risky situations. Personal initiative is also reflected by positively accepting and adapting to changes in the workplace. When I first applied for my job I filled out an application form which required me to include a contact email. The finance managers send an electronic (pdf file) pay slip to my email account every week. The pay slip includes my rates for certain days and other details such as tax deduction and dates that I worked. The pay slip is a visual representation which can be used as proof of how much money should have transferred into my bank account. Because I earn under the tax-free threshold amount my income is not taxed. I was made aware of this when I underwent induction at my workplace. I also have the freedom to check my ‘timesheet’ at work. I can access my timesheet from a computer at work using my personal log in and finger scan verification. On it I can see the exact times I clocked on and off for a shift and when pay started and finished. We are not forced to check this but I like to check it for myself every 2 weeks or so just to make sure I am not being under or over payed. There has only been 1 occasion where I was underpaid and would not have known if I didn’t check my timesheet. It is a great program for employees to access as it gives them freedom to check if they are being payed what they had worked for. Leave loading. I was made aware of my rights as a worker when I started working at Romeos. As I am casual, I am subject to having my shifts cut/changed
