Stages Of Consciousness: Video Analysis

541 Words3 Pages

In watching the two videos, I learned a great deal more than I previously knew about the stages of consciousness. I knew almost nothing about this subject before watching this video, so I was very surprised by all the information I learned. One thing I learned from the video on consciousness was how difficult it is to define what consciousness actually is. In the video, the man, Hank Green, explained consciousness as our awareness of ourselves and our surroundings. Shortly thereafter, Green tells about the different ways we can view the structure and activity of the brain. He defines cognitive neuroscience as the study of how our mental processes link with our brain activity. These neuroscientists do so by using structural and functional imaging, which allows them to see the anatomic and electromagnetic components of the brain. Along with this, scientists have learned about dual processing, the principle that information is simultaneously processed consciously and unconsciously by using a deliberate mind and an automatic mind. …show more content…

First, Green tells about selective attention, the kind of attention that allows us to focus on one stimulus or a group of stimuli. In consequence of selective attention, we have selective inattention, in which we are so focused on one stimulus we are unable to focus elsewhere. Also, inattentional blindness, like selective inattention, causes us to be so focused on a task, we become blind to something entirely obvious. Lastly, Green refreshes my memory surrounding change blindness, the ability to see changes in our environment, by telling about a person swap like the Brain Games used in their
