Military submarines have been in use since the Revolutionary War and continue to be extensively used by many of the world’s most powerful countries. Military Submarine technology and design particularly evolved and drastically improved during the tumultuous times of the Cold War and the nuclear age. In the 1970’s when nuclear submarines were key players in the idealogical, nuclear standoff, named the Cold War, many missions were made by the United States and Russia, a like, to harness the power and abilities of the submarine. Stalking The Red Bear is one of these many fascinating stories. Centered around the submarine the Blackfin and its captain Roy Hunter this detailed account allows the reader into life aboard a Cold War, nuclear submarine. While both remain posthumously named for safety reasons this true story is amazing story of bravery and stealth. The Blackfin is described, in this true story, as being a part of Sturgeon-class of submarines. Theses sleek nuclear submarines were designed as fast attack submarines and were used heavily in the United States’s navy. The Blackfin’s mission, as detailed in Stalking The Red Bear, is to tap into the lines of Soviet communications in order to gain desperately needed information that could affect greatly the outcome of the Cold War.
