The Japanese anime industry traces its roots all the way back to the mid 1900s. The rise of the globally popular Japanese anime started with the influence of the western animation films that inspired the Japanese film industry after the Second World War (Teong, 2015). Nevertheless, despite the fact that it had been inspired by foreign influence, the Japanese anime has grown into a rather unique and outstanding genre - both with Japan’s film industry and across the world – with a great influence on the youth culture within the country. As such it has mastered a massive following over generation with a unique message of its own; a message that has been able to appeal to the Japanese youth in general. Domestically, as a comic hero, Doraemon is not a recent addition to the hearts of Japanese audience. Before the recent release “Stand by Me Doraemon”, the robot cat and the rest of the characters have been featured before in comic book series, animated series and movie series as well for quite a long time.
Doraemon the Japanese manga character was made in 1969 by Fujiko F. Fujio. It was later made into an animation in 1973. While other animations like “Guinea Pig” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion” seem to have attracted negative publicity due to their violent influence, Doraemon sends a message that would be considered as rather positive within the local industry. The manga character provides the youth with dreams and hopes within Japan as well as technological and educational knowledge (Tsukamoto, 2015). The current animated film has been adapted from the previous series that featured the adventures of Doraemon and Nobita with just a little twist to the stories. As such this particular animated film’s impact is strengthened by the fact that has already inspired billions of youth across the country, some of who are even adults but yet have grown up watching it during their childhood
