1920’s CRQ The early 20th century distinguished the America we are familiar with today so well, the era received the title: The Roaring Twenties. One may assume the phrase is overdone, but the nickname rather suits for the events that helped America take off. However, whenever there is a change, contention always follows its wake.
The 20’s and 30’s The 1920’s and 30’s were transitional times in American history. The 1920’s were a time carefree living and success. Americans were wealthy and prosperous, while businesses were booming and stocks were rising. In the 10 years that followed the stocks fell, america was at a standstill, and americans were disgraced.
In 1920, the United States was celebrating the “Roaring Twenties”. It was a time of great prosperity, but not for all of Europe. We were celebrating relief from World War I and the money we received from it. We were getting back to normalcy. We were almost solely an isolated country, but our foreign policy was going to change within the next ten years.
Many Americans in the ‘20s had unprecedented prosperity. Entertainment and leisure became very popular, the wealth it brought in led to new technology such as movies, sports, and the TV; African Americans pushed for freedom and rights. This era was also referred to as the “Roaring Twenties.” Most of the defining features of Modern American culture emerged during the 1920s. This time period primarily stands out as one of the most important in American history because that decade produced many artists, musicians, and writers who were some of the most innovative and creative people in the country’s history.

President Warren G. Harding had coined the term ‘a return to normalcy’, which was a nostalgic vision of American society with traditional values and roles, and was widely accepted and eagerly embraced by the population. It was during this time that America experienced “The Roaring Twenties”, an outstanding period of prosperity. There was also a significant shift from an agrarian society to an industrial society, which as a result, caused tremendous tension between traditionalists and modernists.
Applying the characterization of “roaring” to explain the 1920s in Canada would be deceptive. The decade of the 1920s contains events and actions that directly represent its disastrous ways. Several sectors of the economy lagged behind due to natural disasters, terrorism and immigration policies. The economic and social divisions between regions and cultures became more evident than throughout the war years. Several components and stories were hidden by the decade 's accomplishments.
America changed and progressed politically, economically, socially, culturally, and artistically during the 1920s. These changes set precedents for the years to come in American history. For the first time more Americans lived in cities than in rural settings during the 1920s. With all the new technological advances people’s lives were made easier by moving to the city. Automobiles become more available to everyone which influenced the migration to urban areas.
When the 1920s are mentioned, many might conjure up images of young women in short dresses, dancing in jazz clubs. Others may think of the explosion of art and music that was the Harlem Renaissance, and still others will imagine a decade of celebration and growth after the end of the First World War. These images are iconic because they were what influenced the culture of the Twenties. The end of WWI, new cultural experimentation, and the jazz music of Louis Armstrong were major factors that influenced the culture of the 1920s.
The 1920s were the first years of the new, modern America, with a growing consumer society and new ideas and rules. America saw many changes throughout this decade, including but not limited to social, economic and political changes. Throughout this time, new values were made with the growth of new forms of entertainment and education. After the Progressive Era, the ideas of political figures changed with a new focus on conservative politics and less labor issues. With the new ability for people to buy other products than basic needs, their money went to new inventions, causing new industries to grow.
Before the world war, America was still rooted in the ways of the nineteenth century. You will find that dramatic economic developments took place during the 1920’s, moving America towards a more modern society. With the movement towards vehicles, flexibility and accessibility was created and towns and suburbs were growing in size as they were no longer based around railway systems. This paved the way towards the birth of new industries such as petrol stations and hotels, contributing drastically towards urbanization. By 1920, 50% of the population was now living in urban areas, whereas before it was only 5%.
The 1920s' in America was a decade full of contradictions, characterized by both optimism, youth, and prosperity, and a growing conservative trend, isolation, and intolerance. I will examine two of these contradictions and explore how they contributed to the development of America during the 1920's and further on. Overlooking the era's overall sense of optimism, driven by economic growth and a youthful spirit, the presence of conservative values and beliefs shaped the nation's approach and had lasting effects on society. The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
There was advancement in household items and more products started to receive more recognition by advertisement. Moreover, there were many social developments during the 1920s of America. After the war, men and women wanted to establish new ways of life. They left old traditions from past generations behind and questioned the customs of their parents and grandparents. The Roaring Twenties was recognized as a Golden Age for its’ mass culture that shaped the new beliefs of those across the United States during the 1920s. This period was known for its’ thriving economy and political changes. New forms of leisure appeared because everyone had a fair amount of spare cash caused by the consumer society developing. Radios were bought, cinemas were opened, newspapers and magazines were sold; all sorts of mass media were methods of communication that emerged during this glorious era. They were not only tools of amusement, but also had the effect of spreading popular culture.
