Naomi R. Lands 20 November 2016 English Composition I Professor Cohen Standardized Tests When I was younger I was taught that the battle for self was fought on the battlefield of the mind. Even then, I felt that there was another battle being fought, and it was the battle of standardized tests within the war on education. Standardized tests, over the years, have changed the viewpoints of parents, students, teachers, and administrators about schooling and education. I propose for us to rid the Austin Independent School District (AISD) of standardized tests altogether and instead carry out a ranking system that uses school evaluations on students and teachers, and teacher-made, class-oriented assessments. This is a desired proposal because standardized tests lead too many problems for people. It increases the stress level passed the limit for students at their age. It incorrectly judges schools, wastes money that could be used for teaching, and causes confusion about what the “standard” actually is for the school’s. The removal of standardized tests is also desired among the parents because their child would no longer be compared to another child in another state, just in their class, and gives them one less thing to think about each year. People would prefer this idea over others because it opens up the pathway for other evolving options to checking up on how someone is doing in school. It allows for schools to actually figure out what is and is not working for them and their students, because not everyone is the same when it comes to
