What is the relationship between standards based instruction, high yield or high effect strategies, and student achievement? While it cannot be argued that the three are related, the way in which the three are perceived to be related is dependent upon the perspective of the writer. For the purposes of this paper, the relationship between standards based instruction, high yield strategies, and student achievement will be shown using Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle (see Figure 1) as shown in his book, Start with Why (Sinek, 2009). The Golden Circle has the WHY of an organization at the center of the circle, the HOW in the next ring of the circle, and the WHAT encompasses the outer ring of the circle (2009). The WHY explains the reason the organization exists. The HOW is explained as the actions or guiding principles that an organization takes to help achieve their WHY (2009). Finally, the WHAT represents the results of the actions taken by an organization (2009). In terms of this paper, the school will be the guiding organization, providing students with a comprehensive and challenging standards-based instruction that will enable them to be career and college ready will represent the WHY or purpose of the organization, high yield strategies will represent HOW standards-based instruction will be accomplished, and an increase in student achievement will represent the results or WHAT of the organization.
