The Stanford Experiment
The most controversial psychological experiment is the Stanford Prison Experiment. This experiment was put together by Stanford professor Philip Zimbardo who conducted this experiment in between August 14-28 1971. The experiment was conducted to show the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. Zimbardo studies have proven the psychological effects of today’s prison system on the human brain. This experiment was going to have students play the roles of prisoners and guards for 14 days. To be stripped as if I was in actal prisoner would feel like my rights was taken away since I had to stripped and have someone I don’t know look at me, I would be very uncomfortable and maybe not able to even complete the experiment. After they was stripped the prisoners was spread down with a liquid that made them think that they was dirty. Then the prisoners were given a number as if they would have gotten if they was actually in jail. The guards were given a khaki uniform that came with a whistle, handcuffs, and sunglasses. These guards were given no training how to actually be guards. Every couple of hours the guards would wake up the prisoners and have roll calls, sometimes early in the morning. Parents were coming to Zimbardo saying that they had been told to get a lawyer so that their child could be let out of “prison”. Zimbardo then called a lawyer to come and ask legal questions to the prisoners. The lawyer did know also that this was just an experiment.
