Stanley’s character What emotions would you feel if you had to dig holes all day in the sun when it is one hundred and twenty degrees outside in a wasteland, and you can only get water every three hours? Now that you have had a moment to think about the question, here are the experiences that will effect characteristics of Stanley. Stanley changes from timid to having confidence because of how Sachar describes him in the beginning, middle, and end. Stanley is timid and unlucky in the beginning of the novel. When Zero batters the shovel against Mr.Pendanski face, he demonstrated bravery by doing so. “The metal blade smashed across. Mr.Pendanski face.” (Sacher page 139,) This shows that Zero has a lot of bravery to hammer a counselor in the face, but in all fairness Mr.Pendanski does treat him badly. Next is when Stanley and Zero are walking to Big Thumb and Zero’s insides are being destroyed, but he keeps walking. In this text evidence it shows that Zero has perseverance “He was weak and exhausted, yet as bad as he felt, he knew Zero felt ten times worse.” (Sachar page 162) “As long as Zero could keep going, he could keep going, too.” (Sachar, 162) Zero has demonstrated that he has perseverance and Stanley won’t give up unless Zero gives. At the beginning of Holes, Stanley was very unlucky and timid, but when Stanley arrives at Camp Green Lake everything changes. Later in the novel Stanley meets Zero who is apparently the great grandson of Madame Zeroni. Soon Zero smashes a shovel in to Mr.Pendanski face which showed Stanley bravery. The other characteristic Zero demonstrated to Stanley was to have perseverance by walking to Big Thumb. At the end of Holes Stanley changed by feeling lucky which he never felt before and confidence by being certain that treasure was in a specific hole.
