In the short story, by Ethan Canin, “Star Food,” a boy named Dade is faced with struggles with his parents that have different points of views as his mother is an optimistic woman that wants Dade to keep dreaming. On the other hand, Dade’s father who is a realist wants Dade to carry the name and own Star Food after his father, he also wants Dade to work in store efficiently. They both wanted different things for his future, but everything changes when a poor, thieving woman enters their lives and steals from their store. Dade did not know what he wanted because his parents wanted two different, opposing lifestyles for him. His mother, thinking he was destined for limited fame, taught him to be a dreamer.

This is how the food industry used to be, before striked laws were created after Upton Sinclair and several others discovered the dark secrets of the food industry, and what they did not tell you about the food that many people ate. On September 20, 1878, in Maryland Baltimore Upton Sinclair was born.
At this point in the story, Dade has decided to follow in his dad’s footsteps and catch the woman, and when he tells his mother this, she “[began] to weep behind the counter” (Canin 16). Dade, sure that “[his] life was making sense,” gripped the woman by the arm when she came in and took her to the stockroom (Canin 14). But during this, Dade began to feel “flushed with remorse” for both the woman and his parents, so he released her. Dade now has both physically and figuratively let go of his parental conflict, and makes sure not to choose a side. Dad doesn’t win because the woman was released, and Mom doesn't win because Dade gave up on his dreams just minutes
The father is left with a difficult choice: give up his new-found bond with his son and conform to his wife’s wishes, or rebel against her and side with his son? The story answers the question of whether or not all the consequences of rebellion are negative.
The mother believes that he should drop out of school and become a fishermen, just like the rest of his family was. “I say this now with a sense of wonder at my own stupidity in thinking I was somehow free and would go on doing well in school and playing and helping in the boat and passing into my early teens…” (8) He never thought his mother would create this tension between her family. She never even considered or thought of letting her son do what he wanted. She was angry that her son did not want to carry on the tradition of being a fishermen.

An Edible History for Humanity was written by Tom Standage which emphasis the history of food and farming used by man throughout history. This book takes us through different parts of the world and gives us examples of how food has changed their way of life. The first civilizations had to go on very little for food. But in the early civilizations,Standage has thought me that food drew everything together. Food wasn’t there just to eat,but was the driving force for the life style of civilizations.

The poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee depicts the complex relationship between a boy and his father when the boy asks his father for a story and he can’t come up with one. When you’re a parent your main focus is to make your child happy and to meet all the expectations your child meets. When you come to realize a certain expectation can’t satisfy the person you love your reaction should automatically be to question what would happen if you never end up satisfying them. When the father does this he realizes the outcome isn’t what he’d hope for. He then finally realizes that he still has time to meet that expectation and he isn’t being rushed.
